Highlights & Inclusions
There are three types of room. Thsoe in the Lodge, the Treehouses and The Olive House apartment:
The Lodge Queen Rooms
Like the rest of the Lodge, the Queen Room is outfitted with our custom designed handcrafted furniture including, according to our guests, “the most comfortable beds in the South Island.” Though a quarter smaller than the King Room and without ocean views, the Queen Room is comfortably sized for two adults.
The Lodge King Rooms
Like the rest of the Lodge, the spacious King Room is outfitted with our custom designed handcrafted furniture including, according to our guests, “the most comfortable beds in the South Island.” As well as being a quarter larger than the Queen Room, some of the King Rooms offer ocean views.
Tree Houses (amazing)
Unique New Zealand accommodation, nested 30 feet (10 M) above the ground in the canopy of a native Manuka grove, each Tree House has spectacular views of Kaikoura's dramatic mountains and surf-washed Pacific coastline. As with the Lodge, the Tree Houses are meant to be a contemporary complement to the natural environment. Their exteriors are clad in native woods and copper shingles. Large windows bring the tree canopy right into the bedroom. We designed the furniture and had it crafted by local woodworking friends.
The one bedroom Tree House is a favourite for honeymooners and couples looking for a luxurious tree top stay.
The two Lower Branch Tree House rooms are smaller with fewer appointments than their one bedroom cousin. They are ideal for those guests preferring a Tree House experience at a lower price than the one bedroom option.
Two Tree Houses were created with families in mind. They include the upper bedroom Tree House for the parents with a lower bedroom (what we call the Lower Branch Tree House) for the children.
The Olive House Apartment
The Olive House is located just minutes from the main lodge. The top level is our most spacious accommodation choice, an elevated open-plan apartment with excellent views of Kaikoura's environment. On the ground floor is theolive press and conference room venue. The Olive House apartment includes all the features of our six guest rooms as well as:
360-degree views of mountains, sea, olive orchard and deer herd.

The waters off Kaikoura’s coast are extremely rich in marine life. So much so, that New Zealand Geographic calls Kaikoura, “A maritime Serengeti”, “a Sea World without Walls”. The natural landscape creates an abundance of activities in and around Kaikoura for guests to explore. Hapuku Lodge is a great base camp from which to undertake a marine safari. World famous whale watching, giant albatross encounters, playful dolphin and seal swimming, sea kayaking, and deep-sea fishing are available year round.
For those staying off the high seas, options include night sky tours, Maori cultural tours, scenic flights, winery tours, horseback riding, biking and great hiking (or tramping as we call it in NZ). It is less than a kilometre down the Lodge's country lane to the acclaimed ocean surf of Mangamaunu Bay.
And guests can use the Lodge's mountain bikes (and helmets) to tour the local by-ways.
The main lodge is the gathering point for all Hapuku Lodge guests. The décor in the Lodge dining room and lounge features high ceilings, earthen tones, custom designed handcrafted furniture and a mixture of New Zealand and international art and ceramics.
The lounge is organized to foster conversation in front of the fire. European tilt-swing windows overlook native gardens and our deer farm, set off by the backdrop of the Kaikoura Seaward Mountains. Complimentary internet is available in the lounge. As is our DVD collection.
Serving breakfast and lunch for guests and dinner for guests and visitors by reservation, the kitchen focuses on preparing fresh and flavourful food, sourced whenever possible from local purveyors and organic growers with whom the hotel often have a direct relationship. With this farm gate to plate philosophy in mind, and in keeping with the environment, the resident chefs create world class food that remains unpretentious and focused on the flavours of fresh quality ingredients.
Dinner is 3 courses with multiple choices within each course, created from seasonal produce. Wine, cocktails and canapés are complimentary before the meal. Dinner is at private tables in the lodge, warmed by a well stoked fire and looking out to the deer paddock and mountains.
Each morning, their cooked and continental breakfast options are a la carte, with fresh locally baked breads and pastries fresh coffee, tea and juices.
