Fly-drive & self-drive holidays in New Zealand
New Zealand is one of the world's great road trip destinations - and a self-drive is simply the best way to experience it. We'll handle the flights, accommodation and itinerary planning, then hand you the keys and let the country do the rest.
One island or two?
Nearly all of our self-drive travellers explore both islands, and we'd always encourage that. The North and South Islands have completely different characters - and together they make for one of the most varied road trips on earth.
What are the roads like?
New Zealand is an exceptionally easy country to drive. Roads are quiet, well-signed and uncongested for the most part — and you'll be driving on the left, just like home. Getting out of Auckland during rush hour is the only real thing to plan around. Beyond the cities, the roads open up with endless places to pull over and take it all in.
"It's very easy driving. Roads are generally very quiet with loads of stop-off points along the way." - Chris, New Zealand Product Director
Parking is largely free across the country, with the exception of a few busier spots like Queenstown and the main cities.
Popular destinations for a New Zealand self-drive
